The acceptance of “Ms.” is encouraging. (I know some who prefer "it", too, but that is another matter entirely.) It is a sticking point for lots of folks.

I usually point out that singular "they" already has a well-attested usage in English; it's used to refer to a person of unknown gender; e.g., "Somebody left their umbrella. My elementary grammar textbook disparaged this idea, as did yours, but practically everyone I've met uses it this way in informal speech, simply because it's less unwieldy (wieldier?) than "his or her" or similar constructs. Recently the AP stylebook condoned and recommended this usage.

To the common objection "singular antecedents should have singular pronouns," I would point out that Latin and German, English's closest linguistic relatives, use identical words for both a singular and plural pronoun.

I hope you find this helpful. I, a lifetime lover of mathematics, discovered your blog through the Wiki article on Armstrong numbers, and I appreciate your research and writing.Sasha Liskovahttps://sverona.devnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-23635591944586952182023-12-30T09:20:21.316-05:002023-12-30T09:20:21.316-05:00I cannot be of much help. I was baptised & confirmed at All Saints & married at Christ Church in Greensburg. I was so excited to see the link to a slideshow of All Saints posted in the comments by Bruce R. I was broken hearted to realize it was no longer working. I don't know if there's any way to see if there's any other way to view them. I guarantee my family of 7 are in some of them as we went there from early 1970s until 2004. So many wonderful people worshipped there together. Fr. David Canan was my 1st youth group leader & he was (and is) amazing. I have very few photos from my days at youth group or events. If you have any way to ask about the photos, I'd be so grateful! I miss that church family. We recently lost Barbara Miller & my mom Carol LaRotonda in 2019. They were such amazing examples of Christ's love. I'm so grateful God put my family there.
Lesliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04093545144420162135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-66925417826268507792023-10-25T23:23:57.426-04:002023-10-25T23:23:57.426-04:00Who is credited with coinage of the expression &qu...Who is credited with coinage of the expression "Hardshelled Baptist?"Cyzichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05476034646934282382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-89706434363126536302023-07-09T12:19:57.481-04:002023-07-09T12:19:57.481-04:00I borrowed a Blu-ray disk of Where the Crawdads Si...I borrowed a Blu-ray disk of Where the Crawdads Sing from the library. “Activist...Thank you for your thoughtful comments.

“Activist” only implies working toward some controversial goal. I have worked to support the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion in their conflicts with their aggressive evangelical opponents. I have been president of Progressive Episcopalians of Pittsburgh and the founder of the No Anglican Covenant Coalition, the latter being an international Anglican group. And since the Episcopal Church has supported gay and transgender rights, access to abortions, etc., my support of it is certainly advocacy for social change.

As for yard signs of whatever sort, I think I have a good understanding of Episcopalian sensibilities. I may not always identify signs displayed by Episcopalians, but I think I can usually identify those that are not.

The sign in the picture is, for me, problematic in several ways. Whereas “Jesus is my savior” is not my style either, I don’t find it objectionable. I do object, however, as would many, though not all, Episcopalians, with the juxtaposition of Jesus to the U.S. flag. Jesus is savior to the world, not to American. And, of course, Trump is the president of whoever put up this sign only in some alternate universe.Lionel Deimelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08363018512775944659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-67741206703153214262023-05-31T11:35:51.179-04:002023-05-31T11:35:51.179-04:00This was a 👍 post. An activist is defined as one who pursues social change. The most well known was MLK. Although a minister he is not called a Baptist activist. Perhaps enthusiast would be a better term for you.

In this post you imply that having Christian yard sign is an indication that the resident is not Episcopalian. Really?!

There are all kinds of Christian yard sign and bumper strips. I agree the one you quote is not to my taste. Perhaps if you met the family in question your response should be a polite version of "I'm glad He is and no he is not."

Keep on with truth, beauty and justice.Tetonkayakrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05191413425183597307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-86246137312773952023-02-28T08:48:34.737-05:002023-02-28T08:48:34.737-05:00On NPR this morning, proposed changes in Mexico li...On NPR this morning, proposed changes in Mexico likely to weaken election protections were referred to as “reforms.” A bit later, however, the changes were referred to as “so-called reforms.” That phrase is a good way for journalists to report on such proposals.Lionel Deimelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08363018512775944659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-30445931049623946862023-02-18T15:07:24.380-05:002023-02-18T15:07:24.380-05:00There is no godThere is no godunkmonk1https://www.blogger.com/profile/17250945777137265312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3320087.post-34311970564564507222023-02-08T18:01:50.108-05:002023-02-08T18:01:50.108-05:00You may need to experiment with different baking t...You may need to experiment with different baking times.
